There are hundreds of horror stories where hobbyists discovered that they made fish soup, all because of a faulty heater. Let’s say that your in-line heater doesn’t turn off when it reaches your set temperature. Yes, I know that in-line heaters have a built-in thermostat that switches the unit off once the correct temperature is reached… These dry spots then overheat, which can lead to…Īnd, that’s a headache you don’t want to deal with.įor the sake of your tank, I highly recommend installing your in-line heater in the vertical position.īonus tip: Before you turn the heater on for the first time, wiggle the hosing and heater to let any trapped air bubbles out. You see, in-line aquarium heaters have an automatic shut-off to protect them in the event that they run dry.īut if you position the in-line heater on an angle – or worse, horizontally – you risk air bubbles creating dry spots on the glass that lines the heater. The reason is actually pretty simple – to prevent bubbles and dry spots. You may be wondering why most in-line heaters recommend that you install them in an upright, vertical position. While the instruction manual likely has all the information you need, here are some handy tips to get the most out of your heater: 1. So, you just bought a brand new in-line aquarium heater, and now you want to install it. Speaking of which… How to best install your in-line aquarium heater © jmowbray However, care during installation and using the correct tools and equipment will minimize any possible chances of leaks occurring. One more thing to keep in mind is that if the in-line heater is switched on, and no water flows through it, you risk damaging the heater.įortunately, most quality in-line heaters have an automatic shut-off in the event that they run dry.Įvery extra piece of equipment you add to the line increases the chance of leaks occurring.Įspecially if the in-line filter is not installed correctly. This means the water temperature of your tank is going to drop until the flow returns. If your sump or canister filter fails or is turned off, no water is pumped through the heater. This downside is so obvious that you might have missed it. While you could always go the DIY route, those of you who want a ready-to-go in-line heater that just works will need to fork over the money. Those of you who are trying to set up a tropical fish tank on a budget may be put off by the price. There is no ignoring the price of in-line aquarium heaters – they are twice as expensive as your standard submersible heater. You can keep it running through each water change – you don’t have to worry about forgetting to turn the heater off or back on. Not only can submersible heaters overheat when exposed to air, but when hot glass comes into contact with cold water, like from a water change, it can crack from the sudden change in temperature.īut that isn’t the case with an in-line heater! If you don’t, you risk destroying your aquarium heater, leaving your fish in the cold. Water from an in-line heater flows back inside your tank and circulates, evenly distributing the heat.ĭid you know that if you use a submersible heater, then you need to switch it off every time you do a water change? The water closest to the heater will be the hottest. It distracts the viewer from all the painstaking effort you spent on perfectly recreating your fish’s natural habitat.īecause an in-line heater is located externally, all that you are left with is the beauty of your fish floating around – nothing ugly.Īnother problem with submersible aquarium heaters is that they inefficiently heat your tank. Let’s face it, having a submersible heater on display, inside your tank, looks awful. What are the pros and cons of in-line aquarium heaters?īefore you decide that an in-line heater is right for your tank, consider both the advantages and disadvantages… Pros of in-line aquarium heaters Once the temperature drops, the in-line heater switches back on again… And, the cycle continues. Once this temperature is reached, the in-line heater switches itself off by using a built-in thermostat.Īt this time, water still flows through the heater but will no longer be heated. In its simplest form, an in-line heater is little more than a pipe with a heater element.Īs the water flows through this ‘pipe,’ it is heated to a preset temperature before being returned to your aquarium. Most aquarium heaters sit inside your fish tank, clearly on display.Īn in-line heater, on the other hand, is plumbed into your aquarium’s filtration system, on the outflow line, heating the water as it returns to your tank. "This detection raises the question of what could cause this extreme signal that we've never seen before and how can we use this signal to study the universe," Michilli said. Doing so would help the team investigate what might be causing the pulses and learn more about the unexpected behaviors of neutron stars. To learn more about the bursts and their mysterious source, the researchers are now preparing to hopefully catch additional pulses from FRB 20191221A. From the properties of this new signal, we can say that around this source, there's a cloud of plasma that must be extremely turbulent." "We've seen some that live inside clouds that are very turbulent, while others look like they're in clean environments. "CHIME has now detected many FRBs with different properties," Michilli said. They aren't sure what could be behind this intense luminosity, but they proposed that it could be caused by a source that is usually not as bright but, for some unknown reason, fired off a succession of brilliant bursts that CHIME happened to catch. Sorry folks: 'Alien' signal from Proxima Centauri was likely just a broken computer on Earth Ultrahot, ultrafast explosion called 'the Camel' has astronomers puzzled But there was one key difference: FRB 20191221A seems to be a million times brighter, according to the scientists. This is the first time the signal itself is periodic."Īfter analyzing the pattern produced by the signal's radio bursts, the researchers found that its emissions closely matched those seen from radio pulsars and magnetars spotted in our own galaxy. "Not only was it very long, lasting about 3 seconds, but there were periodic peaks that were remarkably precise, emitting every fraction of a second - boom, boom, boom - like a heartbeat. 21, 2019, while scanning the skies for distant hydrogen radio emissions, CHIME picked up the strange signal. The astronomers first spotted the new signal using the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME), a radio telescope designed to spot radio waves emitted by hydrogen at one of the earliest stages of the universe - when mysterious, hypothetical dark energy first caused the universe to begin expanding at an accelerating rate. And we think this new signal could be a magnetar or pulsar on steroids." "Examples that we know of in our own galaxy are radio pulsars and magnetars, which rotate and produce a beamed emission similar to a lighthouse. "There are not many things in the universe that emit strictly periodic signals," study co-author Daniele Michilli, an astrophysicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said in a statement. While most FRBs are one-time events, some repeat - sometimes in a single brief burst and other times across multiple periods. But scientists aren't sure that all FRBs come from magnetars. Pulsars and magnetars have unusually strong magnetic fields that are often millions or trillions of times more powerful than Earth's, and as they spin rapidly in space, they sweep out a beam of intense electromagnetic radiation from their poles, like giant lighthouses. Magnetars, and their less magnetized cousins pulsars, are special types of neutron stars, which are ultradense stellar corpses left behind from the explosive deaths of stars. In 2020, the first-ever detection of an FRB within our own Milky Way galaxy enabled scientists to trace the FRB's origins to a magnetar, a highly magnetized, fast-rotating husk of a dead star. Constantly foiled in his attempts to leave, and already chewed out over the phone by his mom’s accusatory lawyer (Richard Kind), Beau is terrorized by Grace and Roger’s pissy teenage daughter, Toni (Kylie Rogers), whose pill-popping makes her own overmedicated parents look like Temperance League activists.įinally, he manages to escape, chased by Grace and Roger’s animalistic psycho boarder Jeeves, who served with their now-deceased son Nate on the front lines in Caracas (where the U.S. After a hellish series of mishaps - involving a brown recluse spider, a naked tussle in an overflowing bathtub, a standoff with the world’s most inept cop, a stabbing, and a speeding truck ramming him from out of nowhere - Beau winds up in the pleasantly appointed home of Grace (Amy Ryan) and Roger (Nathan Lane), a relentlessly positive bourgeois couple who care for his wounds and promise to take him to his mom’s funeral. It would be tempting to say that Beau Is Afraid is the story of Beau’s journey back home, but really, there isn’t much of a journey. How does he find out? A random UPS driver (Bill Hader) who happened to find his mother’s headless body answers her phone when Beau calls. Then, after a hilariously surreal sequence in which Beau desperately attempts to purchase a bottle of water from across the street (to take with his new anti-anxiety meds), our hero learns that his mother has died in a freak accident after a chandelier fell on her head. When his mom (Patti LuPone) finds out he’s not coming, she responds in a cold, passive-aggressive manner that hints at their dysfunctional relationship. Beau is supposed to fly to see his mom on the anniversary of his father’s death, but his keys get stolen and he can’t leave. Aster’s three-hour magnum opus, a psychiatric session masquerading as a quirky A24 comedy-drama, follows Beau, a middle-age nobody living in a bleak one-bedroom apartment on a city street comically ravaged by crime. To try and understand what actually happens at the end of Beau Is Afraid, one must first look back at the rest of the movie. Even the finale, which has Joaquin Phoenix’s Beau Wassermann facing a surreal tribunal, doesn’t really tell us what’s been going on. But Aster refuses to directly explain the events in the film. Namely: Is writer-director Ari Aster okay? And what’s going on in the film’s crazy ending? The picture is structured as an existential mystery, always on the verge of delivering some big revelation that will clarify the insanity we’ve been watching. Regardless of whether you think it’s a masterpiece or a career-ending crime against cinema, Beau Is Afraid will leave you with a lot of questions. Spoilers ahead for the plot and ending of Beau Is Afraid. We are recirculating it now that Beau Is Afraid is available on digital. This piece was originally published in April. I didn't go to college, I didn't study things to make me successful, so if I could do it, anybody can.Ī few years ago, I did a tour and 17,000 to 18,000 people came out, and they came to me with these great stories. I'm very vocal about having teen pregnancies, having three children, being put out of the house, and just moving forward and figuring it out. Reaching the masses, being very transparent about my story with the public, and letting people know that if I can do it then anybody can. What's the most satisfying part about owning your business? It's important for me to give back, because it makes me feel like, why do all of this? So it's not like there's nothing I get out of it. In a way, I feel like I'm selfish in my giving because I get satisfaction out of seeing people smile and seeing people's reactions. On her own with kids to care for, she became ignited with ambition and studied to become a licensed cosmetologist. Then, when she was a teen, she had three pregnancies and was eventually kicked out of her house. Dupart started styling her friends and family as a kid. As with many professional hairstylists, Jesseca Harris-Dupart has been styling hair since she was a child. Titles such as Star Wars, Marvel and others would make the ALP an absolute no-brainer. I think if they were able to accomplish this, AtGames would make a massive splash in the consumer-oriented virtual pinball machine market. Perhaps some from Zen Studios if AtGames is able to work out such an arrangement. Given what I know now, would I buy the machine again? Yes, I definitely would! In the future, I hope to see more tables. For example, with the Zaccaria tables, the balls look like they are rolling across the table, the lighting effects (shadows) look more realistic and the game play seems more accurate than the pre-installed tables. I then installed Vol 1-5 of the Zaccaria Pinball tables as well as the TAITO Vol 1-3 and these look/play much better overall. The 22 Gottlieb tables that are pre-installed are ok tables and they play well with some minor issues. It feels solid, sturdy and looks absolutely beautiful in our game room. After opening the box and fully assembling the unit, I’m very impressed with the build quality. I ordered my ALP sometime ago, at that time Sam’s Club was shipping them in two boxes. The machine ships in two boxes if you order it from Amazon/AtGames and one box when shipped from Sam’s Club (today). Essentially, this means you’ll be able to play hundreds or perhaps thousands of pinball tables on the ALP! There is an input for HDMI to connect other devices, such as a PC and allow playing tables that aren’t native to the machine. There is a lot to like with the ALP, such as the inclusion of a USB 3.0 (storage) + 2.0 port (OTG/Storage), Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Bluetooth which will allow you to add more games to the machine. Interested in playing Visual Pinball X (VPX) or Future Pinball (FP), check out this guide. If you’re interested in setting up Zen Studios FX3 on your PC connected to the ALP, see here. There is also a 1st party option called the VIBS board (or Video Input Backglass Switchboard) which will allow you to utilize the backglass when playing pinball games from a PC utilizing both ALP monitors and controls. There is also a 15.6″ display for the back glass which contains the scoreboard, simulated DMD (Dot Matrix Display) and additional artwork. It also provides haptic feedback which mimics the vibrations you would feel from a real machine, for the most part. It is a Virtual Pinball machine which uses a 32″ LCD display (running at 1080p / 60fps), mounted in a vertical orientation to simulate an actual pinball machine. The AtGames Legends Pinball (ALP) isn’t small but isn’t quite a full-size pinball machine either, slightly larger than 3/4 scale. Not everyone has this problem, for space/price-constrained individuals having one (or more) real pinball machines may not be practical. Space is definitely a concern for me and why I’ve never owned a real pinball machine, as well as the cost. However, the ALP is priced currently around the $750 (USD) range. While they are typically beautifully designed, they are expensive, play one game, prone to repairs and take up quite a bit of room. As you may know, a full-size dedicated pinball machine can cost upwards of $5,000-$15,000. If you’re new to the ALP/virtual pinball, I’d recommend checking it out (clicking the thumbnail will open the video in a separate tab, you won’t lose your place here). The video to the right was my early experience with the Legends Pinball machine. Video: AtGames Legends Pinball Setup, Game Play and Review One is coming likely within weeks that I think you’ll enjoy! I also plan to add some more advanced modding projects for those that are interested. Please check back often ( See Change log for recent updates) as this guide receives updates as new information is known. If you’re also interested in learning more about your expansion options with the Legends Pinball, a great place to start is the Legends Pinball Modding Series which will step you through many of these. Though, since my initial purchase, I’ve added the Arcade Control Panel, BitPixel HV, well over a hundred Zaccaria and TAITO tables and have connected a PC for playing VPX, Future Pinball and Pinball FX3. You won’t need to expand your Legends Pinball to enjoy playing all the exciting Zaccaria and TAITO virtual pinball tables (volumes are sold separately, however). Back when I received the machine on, there were very few accessories available. There have been a number of great expansion options made available during that time. If you’re curious what I like about it, please see here. I’ve now owned the AtGames Legends Pinball (or ALP) for a full year and I am very pleased with my experience with it during that time. Account icon An icon in the shape of a person's head and shoulders. It was a groundbreaking idea when the program kicked off, as it spurred more sales of both performance cars and parts at dealers across the country by allowing the Sox & Martin team to meet current or potential customers face-to-face and talk about high-performance cars and parts. The new sponsorship agreement also required the Sox & Martin team to hold “Supercar Clinics” at select Chrysler/Plymouth dealerships across the country. With Sox & Martin already running under the Plymouth banner starting in 1965, Buddy Martin and his team received their marching orders for 1967 they were to campaign a pair of brand-new Plymouth Belvedere GTX models in Super Stock. “The last time I checked, we don’t sell nitro Funny Cars,” was a sentiment echoed by many of the top marketing brass at Chrysler during the early fall of 1966. Remember, it was Plymouth and Dodge that had the marketing foresight to get their factory-backed racers out of those flimsy, unsafe, time bomb, nitromethane-guzzling A/FX machines (the precursor to the Funny Car class) and into vehicles that actually resembled what was coming off the assembly line and into dealer showrooms. The team’s biggest sponsor, Chrysler Corporation (or more specifically, the Plymouth brand) was the partner that Buddy focused most of his energy on. With wins racking up, many of these automotive and aftermarket companies had their logos plastered on the Sox & Martin cars and were more than happy to “ride with the winners.” Buddy made sure to cross-promote these brands and products to keep them front and center in the eyes of muscle car buyers and performance parts DIYers alike. It was Buddy Martin who ran the race team like a business and made sure to leverage the many sponsor partners to the fullest and keep the cash flow steady. It was a team effort – the talented driving skills of Ronnie Sox and his ability to cut good lights while powershifting his way down the track paired with the meticulously prepared 426 HEMI engines built by crew chief Jake King, and the always thinking Buddy Martin who managed the team operations while constantly thinking two steps ahead of the competition. These red, white and blue racecars conquered drag strips across America during the 1960s and into the early ’70s. If you’re a Mopar ® enthusiast, you’ve probably heard many stories and tales about Sox & Martin and their dominating HEMI ® V8 engine-powered Plymouth Super Stockers and Pro Stockers. Now that you have created the droplet, let’s attempt to connect using SSH. Copy and paste SSH public key you created/already had(alternatively you can add one later, it’s covered in step 6).Choose datacenter region closest to you.Choose droplet specs - the first basic option will do for a Mumble server (1GB mem/1vCPU).Choose operating system - here we have chosen Ubuntu 16.04.The following is what will need to be changed/selected. You will then be taken to a basic configuration page for a new droplet. To create the droplet, simply go to the Create dropdown menu on the top right of your Digital Ocean account and select droplet. Next you will be asked for a passphrase, whether you choose to use this is up to you, however I would suggest doing so. Hit enter to use the standard name and location for your keys. NOTE: If you already have SSH keys setup you can skip this step. You will also need to use the following software: a browser, a terminal, SSH, a text editor, Mumble-Server and the Mumble client. In order to follow this, you will need a Digital Ocean account and a domain you have purchased from your registrar of choice. Usually I run a Mumble server on a Raspberry Pi 2 in my homelab, however I recently set it up on Digital Ocean and thought I would document the process as I did not find any posts detailing the entire procedure. Although the majority of people have moved to proprietary options such as Discord, I prefer to use Mumble as it is the better option for privacy and freedom. The following was created on a Ubuntu 16.04 droplet but should be very similar if not the same on other distributions. This post will cover the complete process of setting up a Mumble server utilising Digital Ocean as a VPS provider and using a custom domain bought through a domain registrar. |
